Veteran installer told me to use tack strip shims, I was skeptical

This old timer I met on a job in Columbus kept insisting I shim the tack strip on a patio door transition instead of just cutting it close. I figured he was overthinking it, but I tried his method on the last two rooms. The carpet lays much flatter near the sliding door and I didn't have to fight the pile at all. Anyone else get taught a trick like this that quietly saves your day every time?
