Why does nobody talk about the pad choice mattering more than the carpet on stairs?
Last month I redid a staircase in a rental over in Aurora and used the cheapest 8 pound rebond pad because the owner wanted to save $60. Two weeks later the edges were crushed flat and the carpet looked awful on every tread nose. I told him the pad is the part that takes the beating, not the carpet, and he looked at me like I was upselling him. But I have pulled up 15 year old stairs with good pad that still felt solid. So which is it, are we all just guessing when we pick pad for stairs, or is the 8 pound stuff actually fine and I am wrong?
My claim to fame is being the guy who argues about carpet pad at cookouts so take this with a grain of salt. But 8 pound on stairs is asking for trouble, the nose of every tread is where all the weight lands and cheap pad just pancakes under it. Good pad outlasts the carpet up there, that part is not a sales pitch.
