My cat muted me during a job interview in 2019, still got the offer somehow
I was in my Boston apartment at 2 PM, mid-answer about my SQL experience, when my orange tabby jumped on the keyboard and hit the mute button, and I kept talking for 2 full minutes before the interviewer asked if I was still there, so I unmuted and said 'sorry, my cat's an IT expert,' and somehow they laughed and hired me anyway, has anyone else had a pet almost tank a call but it ended up working in your favor?
Two minutes of talking to a muted mic is rough, but I don't buy that the cat thing is what saved you. Interviewers hear "my pet hit a button" all the time and it usually just comes off as a cute excuse. What probably got you the offer is that you handled it without freaking out. I've seen people melt down over way smaller tech issues on calls, and that panic tells the interviewer more than any answer about SQL ever would. Keeping your cool and cracking a joke is a real skill, and honestly the fact that they laughed says more about your vibe than your resume.
