Warning: my cat started meowing during a job interview right as I talked about my focus skills
Had a virtual interview last Thursday and my cat jumped on the desk mid-sentence, knocked over my coffee and meowed loudly into the mic. I didn't get the job, but the recruiter said my cat's interruption was the most honest part of the call. Anyone else have a pet blow your professional image?

Three years ago I would have been mortified reading this, but after my dog barked at the mailman during my last performance review I realized pets just make us more real. Now I think that kind of honesty actually works in your favor.

Imagine your boss trying to write up that performance review. "Employee demonstrated strong focus while canine interrupted mail delivery. Recommend promotion." Honestly, that dog probably did you a bigger favor than any of your actual work that month. Now your manager can't even think about your quarterly numbers without picturing a dog barking at the mailman. That's the kind of brand recognition money can't buy. Your mileage may vary but I'd say lean into it. Next time bring the dog to the meeting.

Actually used to think that would come off super unprofessional, but you're right. That dog story is way more memorable than another boring meeting. Might have to rethink my whole "keep work and life totally separate" thing.
