A stranger's water bottle saved my checkout line meltdown

Last Tuesday at the Target on Broadway, I was 20 minutes into a 30 minute wait with a cart full of cleaning supplies for a client job. The register froze, the cashier looked ready to quit, and this lady behind me just handed me her cold bottle of Smartwater without saying a word. I chugged it, she nodded, and we stood there like two silent soldiers until the system rebooted. We never spoke, but that small act of random kindness got me through without losing my temper. That checkout line stuff brings out a weird side of people. Wait long enough and everyone becomes a silent team, like we're all stuck in the same trench. I've seen it happen at the DMV with someone passing around a phone charger, and once at a packed bus stop a guy shared his umbrella with three strangers he'd never met. It's like we all know the system is broken but we can't fix it, so the best we can do is hand over a cold bottle and pretend this is all normal. That little gesture buys everyone a few more minutes of patience before the whole place goes up in flames.
