At a stoplight in Tucson last week I realized I've been merging onto highways wrong for 18 years

Disagree honestly, merging right at the speed of traffic is how you avoid getting rear-ended or causing a pileup. Slamming your brakes last second is way more dangerous than just speeding up a little.

Slamming your brakes last second is way more dangerous" - yeah, that's the thing nobody tells you. I used to be one of those people who would slow way down and try to merge at 40 mph into 70 mph traffic. Scared the hell out of a lot of drivers, probably. Best advice I ever got was to pick your spot way before the merge lane ends, match the speed of the car in that spot, and just slot in. Don't overthink it, don't brake unless you have to. It feels wrong at first because you're going faster than you think you should, but it's way smoother once you get the hang of it.
