Bummed a lighter from a stranger on the subway platform and it turned into a 10 minute chat about old movies
I used to just put my headphones in and avoid eye contact with everyone during my commute in Chicago. Then last Tuesday I forgot my lighter at home and had to ask this older guy for a light. He noticed my faded Godfather keychain and we ended up talking about Francis Ford Coppola for like 10 minutes before my train came. Has anyone else had a random interaction like that where one small thing broke the ice with a total stranger?

Build on that moment by saying how those little sparks can lead to real connections if you let them. It's wild how a missing lighter turned into a full conversation about old movies that probably would've never happened if you had just zoned out on your phone. Stuff like that reminds me that everyone's got a story worth hearing if we just drop the wall for a second.

That's exactly what I've been noticing more and more lately if I'm being honest. Like how I had to wait for my coffee order the other day and this older guy just randomly mentioned the weather and next thing I know we're talking about how his grandkids got him into gardening and he's showing me photos of his tomatoes on his phone. It's like these tiny cracks in our daily routines where real stuff seeps through if you don't glue yourself to your screen. The bus stop, the checkout line, even the elevator where nobody looks up anymore. Everyone's carrying around these little worlds and most days we just walk past them without even glancing.
