Found out a crazy fact about the London Tube while waiting for a train

I was stuck at the Bank station for like twenty minutes yesterday and got talking to a station worker. He told me the Tube has its own lost property office that gets over 200,000 items handed in every single year. I had no idea it was that many, it's wild to think about all those forgotten umbrellas and books. Has anyone else ever heard a random fact from a stranger that just stuck with you?

Read an article a while back about old department stores. Said they had huge sales to clear out the lost and found every year. Clothes, umbrellas, bags. If nobody claimed it, it got sold for cheap. Makes sense. Not tossing it, but not keeping it forever either. Storage costs money.

Wonder if the Tube sells its unclaimed stuff too.
