Overheard a stranger's phone call at the bus stop yesterday

I was waiting for the 7:15 bus near downtown Austin and this guy next to me was on the phone. He said something like "I finally apologized to my brother after 10 years and he just laughed and said he didn't even remember the fight." It hit me hard because I've been holding a grudge against my cousin since 2018 over something stupid. Now I'm wondering if I should just reach out too. Has anyone else let a small thing drag on way too long and then found out it didn't matter?

Ngl that bus stop guy sounds like he lived a whole dramatic movie scene from 2012 and the brother was just chilling. Honestly I had a similar thing with my best friend in 2016 over a borrowed jacket that got ruined and I found out last year she literally had no clue what I was talking about. I spent like 4 years being salty over a jacket that was from H&M anyway. Tbh your cousin probably doesn't even remember the 2018 drama so you might as well send a quick "hey random but whatever" text and save yourself the mental space.

Read somewhere that our brains actually store memories differently than other people's memories of the same event. Like we fill in the gaps with our own feelings. That bus stop guy probably has a full cinematic version in his head with dramatic music and everything. Meanwhile the brother was probably just standing there thinking about what to eat for dinner. Your H&M jacket story is the exact same thing. We build up these massive grudges over things the other person never even noticed. Honestly freeing to realize we are the only ones carrying that weight.
