Pro tip: Talked to an old guy at the bus stop about his garden
He told me he waters deep every third day instead of a little each morning. My tomatoes got huge after I tried his method last month. Anyone else get killer advice from a random stranger?

Deep watering is the real deal. I switched to a soaker hose on a timer set to run for 45 minutes twice a week and my peppers doubled in size. The old guys at the hardware store are the ones who clued me in about putting a 2 inch layer of mulch down first so the water doesn't just run off.

Mulch really is the secret ingredient, isn't it? I made the mistake of skipping it my first year and ended up with crusty, cracked soil and sad little plants. Soaker hoses are a game changer too, since they deliver water exactly where it's needed without wasting a drop. Have you noticed any difference in how often you have to water since you added that extra layer?

Does the timing matter too much or is it more about the deep soak itself? I started doing the every-third-day thing but I'm watering at noon like a dummy... probably wasting half of it to evaporation. Might try switching to early mornings and see if that helps even more.
