That "handshake fee" at a flea market in Nashville was a lesson I needed

I was at a flea market near Nashville last month looking at old tools. A guy tried to charge me an extra $10 just to "hold" a plane while I checked my wallet. I told him no thanks and walked, but later I saw someone else fall for it. When did it become normal to pay for the privilege of buying something? Have you run into this kind of thing at markets or garage sales?

Didn't you used to just shake hands and that was enough?

I shook a guy's hand once and got pink eye for a week.

Man, I always carry a tiny hand sanitizer now. Learned that lesson the hard way after a bad flu season.
