That old timer at the supply house told me to stop using paper filters on my 90s Carrier unit

He said swap to a washable media filter and I laughed at him until my coil stayed clean for 2 straight seasons while my neighbor kept swapping dirty paper every month.

My buddy Mike swore by paper filters on his Lennox unit for years until he had to replace his evaporator coil twice in one summer. He finally caved and tried a washable filter last year and now his coil looks brand new even after 14 months of heavy use. He still bitches about cleaning it every few weeks but he admits it beats swapping out those flimsy cardboard things all the time.

That part about "his coil looked brand new even after 14 months of heavy use" really sticks out to me. So did Mike ever figure out exactly what the paper filters were doing wrong? Like was it just letting tiny dust particles sneak through, or were they actually restricting airflow so bad the coil kept freezing up? I'm curious what signs he noticed first before that first coil went out. Because I feel like most people just see a dirty filter and think it's doing its job, not realizing it's slowly wrecking their equipment. Did he ever take a paper filter and hold it up to the light just to see how much was actually getting through?

Blame the "set it and forget it" culture we've got with everything now, like people think filters are magic instead of something that actually needs work. @hugo_robinson25's buddy probably never realized how much dust was getting past until it was too late, same way nobody checks their tire pressure until the dash light comes on.
