The grocery store trick that got a stranger talking to me

I started asking the person behind me in line at the Safeway on 5th to pick a number between 1 and 10, then I buy that many scratch tickets for us to split. Last Tuesday a lady named Rosa picked 7 and we won $20, which turned into a 15 minute chat about her grandkids. Sounds silly, but has anyone else tried a random opener like this to get people talking?
