The panhandler outside Union Station guessed my job and it ruined my walk home
I was walking out of Union Station in Chicago last Tuesday around 6pm when a guy sitting on a milk crate asked if I had a dollar. I said no and kept moving, which is my usual move. Then he said, "That's cool, you look like a trainer anyway, you probably don't carry cash." I stopped dead. Nobody guesses that. I'm not huge or anything, I just wear gym shorts a lot. So I turned around and asked how he knew. He said my shoes gave it away, the way the outer heel was worn down from standing all day. That started a 20 minute talk where he told me he used to run a boxing gym on the south side until his back gave out. He wasn't even asking for money anymore by the end, he just wanted to talk about hand wraps. I walked home with his words stuck in my head and now I always carry a few bucks. Does anyone else have a random stranger just read them like a book?
