Why I stopped ignoring the old guy at the bus stop near my office
I used to put my earbuds in and avoid this older man who hangs out by the parking lot downtown. He always wanted to talk about the weather or the bus schedule (which felt pointless). Then three weeks ago he flagged me down to say my tire looked low on air, and he was right - I would have driven on the highway like that. Now I actually stop and chat with him for a minute, and he's been right about two other car things since. Has anyone else had a random stranger save them from a dumb mistake like that?

Man that's just the universe's way of punishing you for skipping small talk. I had a guy at the laundromat warn me my car was leaking coolant once. I thought he was trying to sell me something. Nope, just a dude with good eyes and too much time. Now I'm the weirdo who checks tires for strangers at stoplights.

Harper back there makes a good point but I think we're overlooking the real lesson here. Strangers warning you about car problems isn't random kindness or punishment. It's a form of herd instinct that we've mostly lost because we stare at phones instead of each other's brake lights. Your brain literally evolved to scan for danger in other people's stuff before you had a car to worry about. Back in caveman days, noticing that someone's spear was cracked or their fire was going out saved the whole group. Now we just channel that same instinct into pointing out low tire pressure at gas stations. The weird part is how guilty we feel accepting the help, like we owe something for basic human survival wiring.

Read a study once that said strangers are actually better at spotting problems with your car than your own brain is.
