A regular at the diner told me I saved his marriage with a burger

This guy comes in every Saturday for 6 years, gets the same thing. Last week he told me his wife was ready to leave him until he brought home one of my patty melts. Said it reminded her why she married him in the first place. That one comment hit me harder than any review. Any of you ever get a compliment from a customer that stuck with you for years?

Hear me out, but maybe that guy just needed an excuse to stay and you gave him one. Six years of the same burger and suddenly one patty melt saves a marriage? Sounds like the marriage was already on thin ice and the burger was just the last thing to tip the scales. If it was really that fragile, one good meal shouldn't have that much power. I've seen people latch onto small things to avoid facing bigger problems. Like when a tenant blames a leaky faucet for why they're moving out, but really they just can't afford rent anymore. It's easier to say a burger fixed things than to admit they couldn't communicate for years.

Man, you're really reading way too much into this whole thing. Sometimes a patty melt is just a patty melt, not some deep metaphor for a failing marriage. @murray.drew hit it on the head, people just need something small to shake em up sometimes. You're treating this like it's a court case or something. Not every little thing has to mean there's a bigger problem hiding underneath. Sometimes a guy just gets tired of the same old thing and his wife actually paying attention for once is enough to make him stop and think.

Ah come on @river_allen, you're overthinking it. Sometimes people just need a little shake up to wake up, you know? That guy probably wasn't leaving over a burger, but maybe that patty melt showed him his wife actually cared enough to try something different, and that little bit of effort was enough to crack his wall.
