Dropped $600 on a used Rational combi oven and it paid for itself in a month

Was skeptical about buying a beat-up unit from a closing restaurant but the thing holds temp perfectly and cut my grill time in half during dinner rush. Anyone else gamble on used equipment and have it work out?

Oh come on, your one bad luck story doesn't mean everyone's a fool for trying.

Honestly, I gotta push back on this. You said it "paid for itself in a month" but that's only if nothing goes wrong for the next year. I gambled on a used Rational from a closing spot once and it died six weeks later. The repair cost was like $400 and I ended up spending almost what a new one would've cost anyway. Used commercial equipment is a total coin flip, especially those combi ovens with all their electronics.

Yeah @josepha32 you're speaking my language here. I had almost the exact same thing happen with a used convection oven from a restaurant that shut down. Thought I was being smart and saving money but that thing started acting up after like two months. Ended up paying a guy $600 to fix it and it still never worked right after that. People forget that used commercial gear usually has years of abuse already baked in, especially those combi ovens that are basically computers with steam. The upfront savings just aren't worth the headache when you're running a business and can't afford downtime.
