Line cook said my knife roll smelled like a gym bag, he wasn't wrong

Last Saturday at the pass in Portland, this new kid on the line made a joke about my knife roll reeking after a 12 hour shift. I shrugged it off but then I actually opened it up and yeah, the smell hit me hard. I never thought about how the leather and the damp towels in there just sit and breed bacteria. I spent Sunday scrubbing every handle and soaking the roll in vinegar water, and now I'm wondering how often other folks actually deep clean their gear. Anyone got a routine for keeping their roll from turning into a science experiment?

Honestly I think youre way overthinking this. A little funk in the roll just means you actually worked. Ive had the same towels in my bag for months and the smell is basically my signature at this point. If anything it keeps people from borrowing my knives without asking, which is a plus in my book. Deep cleaning every week just wastes time you could be using to rest or sharpen. The vinegar soak thing sounds like a lot of effort for something thatll smell like a gym bag again after one Friday shift.
