My mandoline sliced right through my fingertip last Thursday and I just stood there staring

I was prepping for a catering gig, slicing up a bunch of beets for a roasted beet salad. I've been using this old Benriner for maybe 5 years, never had a problem. But I got sloppy, was going too fast trying to get through 15 pounds of beets before the lunch rush. My left index finger just kissed the blade and it took off a nice little flap of skin. Blood everywhere, beet juice mixed in, looked like a crime scene. I wrapped it in a towel and had my sous chef drive me to urgent care. Got 4 stitches and a reminder that those guard things actually matter. Has anyone else had a close call with a mandoline that made you slow way down?

My first Benriner came with a cut-resistant glove that I never used until the night I took off the tip of my thumb making cucumber ribbons for a party. Four stitches and a lot of blood later, I realized the gadget is just too sharp for the average home cook to handle without some sort of safety gear. I still use my mandoline regularly, but now I treat it like a power tool - with full focus and that dusty glove finally on my hand.

Jumping in to say @lunaf67 is right, I treat mine like a table saw now.
