Spent years ignoring the fuel filter on my 1972 Chevelle, now the carburetor is paying for it

I bought my 1972 Chevelle back in 2018 and always focused on oil changes and spark plugs, never touched the fuel filter. Last month in Austin, the engine started sputtering on the highway and dying at red lights. My mechanic pulled out the old filter and it was clogged with rust and gunk from the tank, which then got into the carburetor jets. Cost me $340 to rebuild the carb and flush the lines, something I could've avoided with a $12 filter swap every year. Has anyone else skipped cheap maintenance parts and ended up with a bigger bill down the road?
