Contractor walked off my West 117th job over a $6,000 difference and I am still mad about it
Had a guy out to my duplex near West 117th and Lorain back in April to quote a full tear off, and he seemed solid until the numbers came in. He stood on my porch and claimed my roof had two layers so the dump fee alone would run me $6,000 extra, which felt high so I got a second quote. The next guy peeled back a corner of shingle and showed me it was one layer the whole time, with a paper trail to prove it. I picked the honest guy and paid $400 less than the first bid, but the thing that bugs me is how fast the first one tried to pad the price. How do you all screen roofers before letting them up on the house?
That "$6,000 extra for two layers" line is exactly the kind of thing I watch for now. What worked for me was asking the guy to pull up a shingle and take a pic of the layers before he even gave me a number, and the ones who got weird about it were the ones I dropped. Anyone who won't show you proof on the spot is probably hoping you won't ask.
