Furnace died in a cold snap, now I'm eyeing my neighbor's boiler setup

Last Tuesday the heat cut out around 2 AM when it was 14 degrees outside. Had a guy come out and he said the blower motor finally gave up after 17 winters. Cost me $680 to replace and install, which stung, but the real issue is the house dropped to 48 degrees before he got here. Pipes in the basement were on my mind the whole time. Is anyone else running an older furnace and just waiting for the next failure, or is replacing it worth it instead of patching parts?

17 winters is nothing, mine's pushing 25. That blower was gonna die sooner or later anyway.
