Historic area rules are making Cleveland homes too pricey to fix
Everyone says keeping old homes looking original is key, but I think it just adds huge costs for basic repairs. Why not let owners update things safely without all the red tape? Where do you stand on this?

Tbh, historic rules are a headache. Got through it by working with a local historian who pointed out cheaper fixes that still passed inspection.

Yeah, finding a good local historian is key. My buddy had to repair his brick facade and the city wanted all new custom bricks. The historian he hired found original matching bricks from a nearby demolition site, so they just had to clean and reuse them. Saved him like twenty grand.

Seriously, that's such a good point about historians being more than just rule enforcers. They know all the little loopholes and cheaper materials that still keep the historic look. Like sometimes they can approve a modern substitute that looks the same but costs way less, if you ask the right way. It turns them from being part of the problem to part of the fix, which a lot of people don't realize.
