I gave up on those DIY drain snakes and tried a $9 brass cleanout plug trick on my West Side colonial
Our main line backed up every spring for 3 years and I kept renting that 50 foot drum snake from the Home Depot on Ridge Road, about $45 each time. This past April it backed up again and a plumber friend said stop snaking through the floor drain and pull the cleanout cap in the front yard instead. I did not even know I had one under the grass, took me 20 minutes with a shovel to find it near the sidewalk. Turns out the clog was 8 feet in, not 40, so the snake was just poking past it the whole time. I ran a cheap hand auger from the cleanout and pulled out a wad of roots and wet wipes from the old owners. Has anyone else found their cleanout in a spot that made way more sense than fighting the basement drain?
