My neighbor in Old Brooklyn says I should rip out my 20 year old maple because of roots, and I can't tell if he's right or just bored
Last Saturday I was out front raking when my neighbor Walt walked over and pointed at the crack in my driveway and said the maple I planted when we moved in is the reason for it. He swears he pulled out two trees on his lot back in 2019 and hasn't touched his driveway since. Part of me thinks he's right, because the crack lines up almost perfectly with where the big roots run. But the tree shades my whole porch in July and I got a quote for $1,800 to take it down, which feels like a lot to spend on a maybe. Anyone here actually pulled a mature tree for root damage and was it worth it, or did the driveway crack again anyway?
Driveway cracks happen to pretty much everyone with a mature tree anywhere near the concrete, and pulling yours won't undo the crack you already have. Walt's two trees could've come out for a million reasons, so I wouldn't drop $1,800 just because he's got a theory.
