My neighbor offered to fix my fence with a roll of duct tape and a dream

Last fall, a big storm knocked a section of my backyard fence down in Cleveland Heights. My neighbor, Frank, saw me looking at it and came right over. He said, 'I got this, just need my good tape.' He came back with a single roll of silver duct tape and tried to stick the whole 8-foot panel back to the post. It held for about 3 hours before it fell again with a loud crack. Has anyone else had a well-meaning neighbor try a fix that was just too optimistic?

Used to think a little optimism was all you needed for a quick fix. Watching that fence panel give up after a few hours really changed my mind, didn't it? Some jobs just laugh at good intentions and duct tape. Makes you wonder why we ever trust silver sticky stuff with outdoor work.

Oh man, tell me about it. I once tried to patch a cracked flower pot with duct tape. Looked okay for a day, then the whole thing just sagged and peeled off in the sun. That stuff turns into a sad, gummy mess the second it gets wet or hot. It's basically only good for holding together a broken notebook in your backpack.

Didn't he know you need at least two rolls for a job that big?
