My neighbor on West 117th wants to cut down a huge old oak for a bigger driveway
He says the roots are messing up his foundation and he needs the space for two cars. I think the tree adds value to the whole block and he should try root barriers first, which cost about $800 installed. Has anyone else dealt with a big tree dispute on their street?

Honestly this whole thing just reminds me of the time a guy on my street cut down three perfectly good maples for a "sun garden." Now his yard is just a sad patch of gravel and fried hostas. Sometimes people get an idea in their head and don't think about what they're actually losing. A big tree is a whole vibe for a street.

Is the foundation damage actually confirmed by a pro, or is he just guessing? Those old oaks are tough to replace once they're gone. Root barriers seem like a much cheaper first step than cutting it down. I'd want to see some real proof before letting that tree go.

My neighbor's 200 year old oak cracked his foundation last year. The arborist report showed roots over six inches thick under the slab. After seeing that, I'm all for getting a pro out before making any decisions.
