My neighbor showed me how to fix a pipe freeze in 10 minutes

Last winter my pipes froze up in the middle of January, real cold snap we had. I was about to call a plumber, figured it would cost me like $200 easy. But my neighbor, guy named Dave who lives three houses down, came over when he saw me messing with the outdoor spigot. He told me to stop and grab a hairdryer and a space heater instead. Said to aim the hairdryer right at the valve inside the basement and let the space heater run for 20 minutes. I did what he said and sure enough the pipe thawed out in under 10 minutes, no leak or nothing. He told me he learned it from his dad who did it for 40 years in this neighborhood. Has anyone else had a neighbor save them from a big repair bill like that?

Beer money or not, I'd rather just pay the plumber and not risk blowing something up with a space heater.

Man that's such a good story, makes me wish I had neighbors like Dave. I had a similar thing happen with my hot water heater once, thought I was gonna be out a bunch of money but a guy down the street showed me how to reset the pilot light. Saved me like 150 bucks easy. @lee_reed I get the worry about blowing something up, but honestly if you use common sense and keep the space heater away from anything flammable it's probably safer than trying to torch a frozen pipe with a propane heater or something dumb. Your neighbor sounds like a real solid guy, those are the kinds of people you want around when things go wrong. I'd buy him a six pack for sure.
