My water heater gave out on a Sunday, had to drain it myself
Last month, my water heater started leaking early on a Sunday morning. I woke up to about an inch of water in my basement near the furnace. Called around but nobody would come out until Monday, so I had to shut off the water and drain it myself. Took me about two hours with just a garden hose and a bucket. The plumber came Monday and said the tank was 15 years old, way past due. Has anyone else had to deal with a weekend plumbing emergency in Cleveland?

Did you ever hear about the guy who tried using shop vac after his hose failed? I saw a post on a home repair forum where someone rigged up a shop vac to pull the water out faster, but the motor got flooded and blew out. Lucky for you, it only took two hours and no extra damage. Me, I've got a neighbor who swears by keeping a spare water heater in his garage, says it's worth the space just for peace of mind. But I figure if yours was fifteen years old, you were living on borrowed time anyway. Those tanks get rusty inside, and the sediment builds up, making them prone to leaks on the worst possible day.

Oh man, draining a water heater with a garden hose is never fun on a Sunday.

Buddy of mine tried this once and the hose popped off mid-drain, soaked his whole basement floor. Took him like two hours to mop it all up and he had to call a plumber anyway because the valve wouldn't close right. Now he just pays someone else to do it, says the headache isn't worth saving sixty bucks.
