That guy on Nextdoor who said I should just seal my own driveway saved me $400

Some dude named Mike in the Old Brooklyn group kept posting about how easy it is to seal your own asphalt. I figured he was just one of those neighbors who likes to hear himself talk, you know? But after getting quotes for $600-$800, I watched his video he linked and did it myself for around $200 in materials. Took a Saturday afternoon and honestly it looks fine. Has anyone else actually used local rando advice and had it work out?

...and see that's the thing, Mike might just be the type who's done it so many times he forgets what beginners don't know. I followed a dude's advice once on trimming a massive oak branch that was hanging over my garage. He said "just cut it at the collar and it'll heal fine." Well I cut it, it didn't heal fine, and now I've got this weird stub that oozes sap every spring like it's crying. But the driveway sealer thing - I used the cheap stuff from Lowe's, the black stuff in the bucket, and it's been two winters here in Cleveland and it's still holding up okay. Maybe Mike's onto something with the prep work more than the product itself.

Agreed with @jordanblack on the freeze-thaw thing, but glad it worked out for you.

What kind of driveway sealer did you even use? The stuff at the big box stores is usually water-based junk that peels off after one winter. Mike probably has a gravel driveway or lives somewhere with no freeze-thaw cycles.
