The $5,000 water line replacement that turned me into a believer in pipe cameras

I thought pipe cameras were just a gimmick to upsell homeowners until my basement drain clogged for the third time last spring. Called Roto-Rooter in Parma and the guy ran a camera down there for $150 extra. Found a crack where tree roots had punched through a cast iron joint that was 40 years old. Without that camera I would have just snaked it again and wasted another $200 every 6 months. Ended up costing me $4,800 to dig and replace that section but it's been dry for 8 months now. Anyone else had a plumbing camera save them from throwing money down the drain?

Man, that camera paid for itself in one shot, didn't it?

Hear me out on this one. I see the logic, but I think good gear is an investment you make for the long haul, not something that needs to "pay for itself" in a single lucky break. If you're only using it for that one shot, you're missing out on the hundreds of other moments you could be capturing with the same reliability. That camera's real value is in how it handles the everyday stuff, the boring, consistent work you expect it to do without any fuss. A lucky shot could have happened with a cheaper model too, but the peace of mind from knowing your tool won't let you down is what you're really buying.

Respectfully gotta disagree here. I see what you're saying about gear being a long term investment, but with plumbing cameras specifically it's a different animal. That $150 camera run saved me thousands on repeated snaking and potential damage from a hidden leak. You can't compare that to a camera you take on vacation or use for family stuff. This tool solves a specific problem that costs real money if you ignore it. The "everyday stuff" you mention is already handled by regular maintenance and common sense. But that one cracked pipe hidden behind a wall? That's the kind of problem a cheap fix won't touch. I'd rather spend $150 once and know for sure than keep wondering if my drains will back up again.
