Appreciation post: my city's free compost giveaway fixed my dead tomato beds
Every spring I used to buy 12 bags of $8 potting mix for my raised beds in Tucson and the tomatoes still came out sad and yellow by July. Last year I tried the free compost the city dumps at the fairgrounds lot, grabbed three bins worth with my truck, and those same beds grew more tomatoes than my neighbor's fancy greenhouse setup. Am I missing something about why more people around here aren't doing this, or is it just the hauling that turns folks off?
