Carbon offsets felt like a scam until I dug into one project
I always thought buying carbon offsets was just paying to feel better about flying. Then I looked into a mangrove restoration project in Thailand that my coworker funded. They showed actual satellite data of tree regrowth over 5 years and receipts from local workers. Now I'm wondering if some offsets are actually legit or if I just found the one good example. Anyone else have a project they actually trust?

And it's the same pattern everywhere, right? Like how we buy "sustainable" brands at the store but never really know if they're better than the regular stuff. We just pick the one with the green label and hope it's not total nonsense.

Mangrove offsets just let polluters pay poor countries to fix their mess.

Oh man, I gotta push back a little on that one. Yeah, there's definitely a lot of shady carbon offset schemes out there, but mangrove restoration projects are actually one of the few that have been pretty well studied. They store way more carbon per acre than rainforests do, plus they protect coastlines from storms and provide habitat for fish that local communities rely on. The problem isn't really the idea of paying for mangroves, it's more that a lot of these projects get set up without actually checking if the trees survive or if locals get a fair deal. So the core concept isn't totally broken, even if the execution often is.
