Chat with an old farmer changed how I see lawns

Ngl, I was talking to this guy named Pete at the feed store in my town and he said the average American lawn uses like 9 billion gallons of water a day for sprinklers. That one number just stuck in my head and now I'm looking at all these green yards totally different. Has anyone else switched to native plants or clover since learning stuff like that?

That 9 billion number got me too, swapped my front yard to clover last spring.

Hey @ray136, did you have any trouble with the clover during the first summer? I did the same thing last year and honestly the first few months were rough because I planted a bit late and the heat hit hard. But once it got established it held up way better than I expected, even with my dog running around on it. I only had to reseed a couple thin spots this spring.

Clover is a good start but the real game changer for me was thinking about the water bill not just the gallons. Most people don't realize that all those sprinklers watering grass at midday are just evaporating half of it before it even soaks in. That old timer probably saved more by adjusting his timer than by switching plants. Are you finding the clover holds up to foot traffic or do you have to overseed it every year?
