Had to pick between a gas lawn mower and a manual reel mower for my tiny yard in Phoenix
My old gas mower died on me last month, so I had to choose between buying another one for $250 or trying a manual reel mower for $80. I went with the reel mower because I figured it would save gas and be quieter for my neighbors. Has anyone else switched to manual tools and noticed a real difference in their carbon footprint?

My neighbor switched to a reel mower and said his electric bill dropped by $5 a month.

Those reel mowers actually do a better job cutting grass too, they say it's healthier for the lawn since it cuts cleaner than a rotary blade. My buddy's been using one for years and his yard looks way greener than mine.

I dunno, I've had a totally different experience with reel mowers. I tried one for a summer and my yard looked ragged, the grass got all matted down when it got even a little damp. My neighbor's lawn looks great with his reel mower but he's out there twice a week in perfect weather, I don't have that kind of patience. For me, a sharp rotary blade does the job just as clean if you mow regularly and keep it adjusted right.
