I thought home compost bins were a scam until my neighbor in Tucson showed me hers
For a long time I rolled my eyes at those countertop compost bins. My sister in Phoenix bought one back in 2021 and it just sat there smelling up her kitchen, so I figured they were all hype. Then last month my neighbor here in Tucson invited me over and showed me her setup. She keeps a little bucket under the sink, dumps in her veggie scraps and paper towels, and empties it into a tumble bin out back twice a week. She has done this for almost 2 years and her trash can is barely half full on pickup day. She even gave me a bag of finished compost for my tomato plants. I started my own bucket 3 weeks ago and I am already keeping about 4 pounds of scraps out of the landfill each week. What finally got me was how low effort it turned out to be, no smell, no bugs, just a quick dump every couple days. Now I am trying to figure out what to do with it in July when it hits 105 degrees out. Does anyone have a bin that holds up in this heat without turning into a science project?
