My backyard composter cracked after 3 months of freezing weather

I got a cheap plastic bin from the hardware store back in October and thought it was fine. But after that cold snap we had in January here in Minneapolis, the whole side split open. Spilled compost all over the snow, what a mess. I patched it with duct tape but it didn't last even a week. Now I'm looking at getting a metal or wood bin instead, something that can handle the winters. Anyone dealt with this and found a good option that doesn't cost a fortune?

My cedar bin from Menards has held up for three winters now with no cracking or warping. Cost me about 60 bucks if I remember right, just had to screw the slats together myself. Metal might rust after a few years depending on how wet your winters get.

Right? My cedar planters turned into a squirrel hotel faster than I could screw them together.
