My brother in Denver told me to skip the plastic bags for my compost bin

He said the corn starch ones would break down faster in my city's green bin program. I tried it for a month and my bin was a sticky, smelly mess because they didn't break down fast enough in the cold. Has anyone in a colder climate found a better way to line their kitchen compost pail?

Oh, the corn starch bag advice is a classic case of warm weather logic failing in the cold. They just turn into a weird, wet shell that holds all the gross stuff. I gave up and just rinse my bin now.

Wait, Denver told you to use corn starch bags? That's wild advice for a cold place. They basically turn into a gross sludge if it freezes. I just use old newspaper to line my bin now.

Yeah, I tried those bags one winter and it was a total mess. Switched to using brown paper bags from the grocery store and they work way better in the cold.
