PSA: I was wrong about switching to a heat pump for my home

I always thought heat pumps were a gimmick. A guy at work told me to try one after my old furnace died. I spent $4,500 on a ductless mini-split last October. My electric bill actually dropped by 30 bucks a month compared to my gas bill. It kept my 1,200 square foot house warm through a Vermont winter with no issues. Has anyone else had a similar surprise after making the switch?

Wait, are you telling me a heat pump actually saved you money in a Vermont winter? I'll be honest, I always thought they were useless once it got below freezing, but hearing your electric bill went down makes me rethink that. Maybe the tech has gotten way better than I gave it credit for.

Actually a buddy of mine up in Stowe put one in last year and he was pretty skeptical too, but he said his house stayed warm even when it hit 15 below last January. He did mention the backup electric strips kicked in a few times but overall his bill dropped by like 40 bucks a month compared to his old oil setup. So yeah, these new cold climate models seem to handle the freeze way better than people think.
