PSA: Skipping the "energy audit" step cost me 18 months of higher bills
I figured swapping to LED bulbs and a smart thermostat would cut my electric bill by itself. Turns out my attic had zero insulation and gaps around every window frame - took 45 minutes for an inspector to find what I missed for over a year. Anyone else realize they wasted time on the easy fixes first?

Zero insulation and gaps around every window frame" - yeah that was me too. I used to think the audit was just a way for them to upsell stuff, but after finally getting one done last year I felt like an idiot for waiting so long.

Whoa @emery_white zero insulation? That still blows my mind honestly.

@anthony129 oh man, zero insulation is wild! I can't believe you were living in a place with gaps around every window either.

My buddy Mike had a similar situation in his old duplex. He'd been there three years and just assumed drafts were normal until his heating bill hit $400 one January. Finally got an audit and they found basically a whole wall where the insulation had just fallen down inside the framing. Said it was like heating the whole neighborhood.
