TIL my backyard compost pile was way too dry for the last 2 years
I finally bought a $15 moisture meter and found out my compost was sitting at 20% when it should be 40-60%, so now I'm spraying it down every few days and actually seeing food scraps break down in 3 weeks instead of 6 months - has anyone else been accidentally neglecting their pile like I was?

Wait hold on, is a slightly dry compost pile really the end of the world? I mean yeah it's gonna take longer but it'll still break down eventually. Feel like people act like their whole garden is ruined if everything isn't perfect.

Read somewhere that dry piles actually attract less flies and pests anyway, so there's a silver lining to it. As long as it's not bone dry and dust, nature will do its thing eventually.

Stop measuring and fussing over your pile, you are overthinking a process that has worked fine for thousands of years without a single moisture meter. Gardeners got along just fine before gadget companies convinced us we needed to micromanage dirt.
