Unpopular opinion: solar panels aren't worth it unless you own your roof

My landlord talked me into getting a portable solar setup for my apartment last year. Said I'd save like $30 a month on electric bills. Took me 6 months to realize the panels barely fit on my balcony and I got maybe $12 off my total bill. Has anyone else dealt with trying to make solar work in a rental situation with no roof access?

Tried that whole hanging panels off my apartment balcony thing and yeah, what a mess. Ended up just putting a couple small portable ones on the ground near the sliding door, angled them toward the sun, and it worked way better for me.

And nobody's even talking about building codes or HOA rules. @price.gavin got lucky with that ground setup, most apartment leases have fine print that'd kill even that.
