Vent: I wasted $200 on a 'smart' thermostat that my old wiring couldn't even support.

The installer had to tell me my house, built in the 80s, needed a whole new C-wire setup, so now I'm stuck with a fancy paperweight unless I pay for more electrical work.

Actually, a lot of those smart thermostats come with a little adapter kit for old wiring now. Might be worth checking the box before you give up on it!

Did you check if the adapter @torres.grant mentioned was in the box? Mine wasn't, I had to buy it separate and it was still a pain to set up myself.

Yeah that "pain to set up" part is the real issue. Even if you find the adapter like torres.grant said, the install is still rough. They really need to make that whole process easier.
