Visited my old hometown in Ohio and the river is completely different now

I was back in my old neighborhood for the first time in maybe eight years. The creek we used to play in as kids is now a straight, deep concrete channel. The city says it's for flood control after some bad storms. But all the plants and the little bend where we caught frogs are just gone. Is this kind of engineering the right answer, or does it just trade one problem for another?

That sounds like they traded a childhood memory for a drainage ditch.

So they fixed the flooding by making it look like a prison yard? I guess the frogs are in a concrete cell now. Next they'll put up a fence and charge admission to see the world's saddest water feature. Progress sure has a way of making things ugly.

World's saddest water feature" is the perfect name for it. I feel like lily70 is right about the drainage ditch thing, but at least it won't flood. My own backyard is just a mud pit, so I guess I can't talk.
