Warning: my "eco friendly" bamboo towels were a total greenwashing trap

Bought a 12 pack off Amazon last May because they screamed sustainable, but after 3 washes they shredded like tissue paper. Turns out the bamboo viscose process uses crazy chemicals, way worse than plain cotton. I only figured it out when a friend in Portland who works in textiles pointed out the material label loophole. Anyone else fall for this kind of marketing, or know a genuinely low impact towel brand under $30?

...my buddy in Austin bought a whole set of those "stone wash" linen sheets for like $80 thinking he was saving the planet. First wash they came out looking like a wrinkled paper bag and the second wash the seam just gave up on one corner. He messaged the company and they said it was "normal wear for natural fibers" which is code for we sold you garbage. He ended up just getting plain old target cotton sheets and they've lasted three years now.
