Back in '09, a crusty old timer at the shop in Dayton told me my feeds were too timid and I was babying the machine.

He said 'you're not polishing a watch, kid' and after that I started pushing my roughing passes 20% harder, which saved a ton of cycle time on our old VF-2. Anyone else get a piece of advice that made you rethink a basic habit?

That advice is basically the shop floor version of being told to stop petting the cat and just put the food down. It’s funny how a single comment from some guy who smells like cutting fluid and regret can change your whole approach. You go from being careful to just sending it, and the machine usually doesn’t even complain. Sometimes the old timers are just bored, but sometimes they actually know a thing or two.

Grace89 has a point about knowing your machine... but sometimes you just gotta trust the guy who's been there.

I mean, it's not always about just sending it though. On our old Haas, pushing a 20% harder roughing pass would have chattered like crazy because the spindle bearings were shot. Sometimes the old advice is right for their specific machine, but you gotta know your own equipment's limits.
