Chasing a 0.003" taper on a 4140 shaft that ate my whole Saturday
Ran a batch of 4140 shafts last weekend and one came off the lathe with a 0.003" taper over 8 inches, so I figured it was just tailstock alignment and I'd be done in 20 minutes. Ended up checking the headstock, re-leveling the bed, swapping the jaws, and re-indicating the chuck before I found a chip packed under the turret, and the whole thing cost me 5 hours. What's the dumbest little thing that turned a quick fix into your whole shift?
Why is it always the smallest, dumbest thing hiding in plain sight that eats the most time? Same deal with hunting for my keys for 20 minutes when they were in my pocket the whole time, or tearing apart the garage for a tool sitting right on the bench. The fix is never the hard part, it's getting past our own brains assuming it has to be something big.
