DAE notice new guys setting their offsets off the DRO instead of touching off, then wondering why parts drift 0.010 by lunch?
Had a guy start on the Haas last week. Sharp kid, picked up G code fast. But every setup he would zero the display, touch the tool to the stock, and punch the number straight into the offset page without moving the tool off the face first.
Third day his parts ran .008 to .012 fat by mid shift. He blamed the spindle. I blamed thermal growth. Turns out he was double counting the touch off, so every tool was sitting just off the surface.
Took me 20 minutes with a feeler gauge to show him. He went red in the face. Has anyone else seen this with guys coming off manual mills, or am I the only one running into it?
Oh man this hits home. We had a guy do the EXACT same thing on our VF2, came from running a Bridgeport for 15 years and could not wrap his head around the idea that the offset page IS your zero, you don't zero the display first. He was fattening parts all week and swearing the machine was out. Our lead finally sat down with him and made him touch off a 1-2-3 block and mike the result, and you could see it click. The worst part is it's such a quiet mistake because the first part usually looks fine, it's the third or fourth one after things warm up that goes out. I keep telling the new guys to touch off, then pull the tool up and RE-ZERO the display off the face so the number means something. Sounds like your kid figured it out though, sometimes the red face is the best teacher.
