Found a way to stop 4140 from squealing on my old Okuma and it was dumb simple
Had a boring bar that screamed like a banshee every pass on 4140, tried messing with speeds, feeds, and even swapped inserts twice. An old guy at the shop in Gary, Indiana told me to just wrap a couple rubber bands around the bar near the holder. Cut the noise by like 80 percent and my finish came out cleaner too. Anyone else got weird tricks like this that actually worked, or am I the only one with rubber bands on my tooling?
Ran into the same thing on a 1.5 inch carbide bar doing a deep bore on some 4140. The rubber band trick works because it adds a little damping and breaks up the vibration, but I had even better luck with a strip of that self fusing silicone tape wrapped tight a few inches back from the insert. Anything soft and snug against the bar kills the ring. You can also try choking up on the bar as short as the setup allows, every inch of overhang makes it worse.
