Hot take: finishing passes with a spring pass vs without one

I read a post on Practical Machinist where a guy swore spring passes are a waste of time on aluminum, but my veteran coworker says it's the only way to hold +-0.0005 on steel. Which side are you on and what's your go-to material for each?

Agree completely, spring passes are the only way to get that last thou out on steel.

2 AM on a Thursday, I was in my shop trying to get a 0.001 tolerance with a dull carbide insert because I'm too cheap to buy new ones. Ended up with a nice spring pass and somehow the part came out within spec. Then the next pass I took too much off and scrapped it anyway. So maybe the spring pass is more of a suggestion than a rule.

I've made plenty of scrap parts both with and without spring passes so I'm not picky.
